This would be a portfolio for front-end developer and New Orleans resident Michael Milstead. However, you'll notice that it is not. Oh, yes. Life is not quite as magical as one would expect. Truth is, the site is undergoing one or three major changes and will return quite shortly. In the meantime, enjoy (or not) my incoherent ramblings about nothing in particular. I'm no poet, be warned.

Three months (approximately) in.

Look! Someone left a lone pretzel on my car, right above the driver’s door. How special.

Is my car dirty? Verily.

So, the colder months had warped my apartment’s front door in a direction that tended to hinder its practical function. Here in the warmer months, it has merely decided to change direction. Different method, same problematic outcome. And it is these warmer months which has also provoked the startling revelation that making the now traditionalized weekend trek to the park (0.6 mi) in my usual attire will add minor health complications. Short and sweet, I’ve gotta buy a pair of shorts, mang. It’s frickin’ humid.

But I’m here. I’ve made it, survived, etc. Another two days of exploration, and the city hasn’t eaten me alive yet.

This was taken a block from Magazine Street. I really wanted to steal it. And interestingly enough, it is no longer there.

Today is Free Comic Book Day across the nation. Specially released titles were to be made available at participating shops (which include the two that are right next to me), but I ignored all that and bought volume one of Mister X from store #2, instead. The girl minding the register ended up inviting me to a keg party that’s actually starting right…about…now. The party is at the shop itself, and I’m not the most fluent kiddo in the world when it comes to discussing comics. I’d rather get nerdy with people about other things. She also offered me a temporary tattoo that promoted the “holiday,” but the male clerk overheard and jumped in with, “Don’t do it, man! It burrrrrrnnnnns!” He yanked apart the top two buttons of his shirt to reveal the tattoo centered on his chest. Brilliant.

Wait. “Keg party at the comics shop.” Hah.

Here’s the stance of triumph the kid in plaid assumes after an awesome jump from the steps with his skateboard. I was too slow to capture the jump, but here, have a poorly composed shot of the aftermath anyway. (taken under the interstate)

I’m halfway through Mister X. German Expressionism in comic form? Sure, I’ll take it.

Yet another one of those lists of “inspiring logo designs,” but it was tough to find one I didn’t like out of this blog post.

Measuring Type
Funny, yet informative, set of pages where the amount of pen ink used in relation to the typeface written in is measured and compared. I’m happy about the winner.

Albemarle is an international developer and marketer of specialty chemicals for use in pharmaceuticals, consumer electronics, petroleum refining, and many other markets. Imagery and verbiage already widely used by the corporation were combined to summarize their identity and mission in one designed piece.
Cajun Connections is a Louisiana-based parent company over a selection of services which each focus mainly on assisting in new employee training and rewards within certain industries. Thus, the “nurturing” aspect is more prevalent than “Cajun,” and is also a reflection of their tag line. As you can see above, “Connection” was the original choice, and the plural form was later added by the company themselves, shown in the following images.

Tally books are pocket notebooks that oilfield and construction workers commonly carry around at the work site and have proven to be very useful for notes and other things. For years, the standard was for the company to issue basic 2-color books to their employees sporting only their logo and occasionally some measurements or contact info.

J.W. Toups, Inc. has integrated a new full color printing process for these books, and I am sometimes requested to design a spec sample for a new client. These are a few I’ve designed over the past couple of years, showing the possibilities that full color printing can bring if the client wanted to add detailed charts or other important images to their tally book.
